The MDB is ideally suited for installation in this classic
switcher The front row of screw terminal connectors allow shell
removal for maintenance. Also, lamp replacement is a snap.
The board just fits under the hood, hosting the Lionel R2LC card.
The mounting of the MDB was accomplished by replacing one
of the triac heat sink screws with a longer screw to protrude through
the original "E" unit mounting bracket. A hole was
drilled in the "E" unit bracket to provide optimal location of
the MDB and R2LC.
The R2LC is positioned slightly above the channel in the
switcher base. The combined width of the R2LC and the MDB is
slightly larger than the channel. Positioning the R2LC slightly
above the channel gives the needed clearance. A piece of
electrical tape provides insurance if the R2LC moves.
A close-up of the program / run switch mounting
bracket. I used a piece of brass mounted to the brush plate, and
soldered directly to the program / run switch lugs. This provides a
secure mechanical mount and electrical ground for the switch
operation!
The program / run switch can be seen in this
bottom view, sitting perfectly between the frame and cab. Only the
switch lever is visible when the switcher is operating on the layout!
